When it comes to the holidays, we have to say from experience that downtown Tacoma does it right. From a festive ice skating rink to classic Christmas performances, there’s something for every single weekend in December, and plenty to keep the kids busy with once they’re on break!
One of our favorite spots is the Franciscan Polar Plaza, a downtown Christmas tradition. Located on Pacific Ave right across the street from the Tacoma Art Museum, this ‘pop up’ ice skating rink is fun for the whole family. Visit polarplaza.com to learn more about times and admission rates! (Tip: Costco members can get a special discount… learn more here! Also, your ice rink admission earns you a $5 admission to the Tacoma Art Museum, too).
Of course, Tacoma has lots of Christmas classics for the community to enjoy: Several performances of The Nutcracker, performed by the Tacoma City Ballet, take place throughout December at the Pantages Theater. (They’re celebrating their 30th year of Nutcracker performances this year!) A performance of Handel’s Messiah and more Christmas events are also going on at the Broadway Center this year, too. Annie, a classic Christmas favorite, will be performed by the Tacoma Musical Playhouse throughout the month of December— get your tickets while you still can!
Have you been meaning to visit the LeMay Car Museum? December is the perfect time (a visit to the car museum would make a great Christmas gift!), because from the 13th to the 24th, the museum is celebrating the 12 days of Christmas and hosting lots of fun family activities including a Santa photo booth, crafts, ticket giveaways, and more. Check out a calendar of events here.
